Kid’s Bedroom Safety Tips & Tricks
In addition to making sure that all toys, electrical outlets and appliances are safe and quality assured, it’s a good idea to make an overall approach to safety in your child’s room.
Here’s what to look for when assessing the safety of your child’s room.
Here’s what to look for:
- Furniture should be approved and certified. Make sure that all furniture in your child’s room is sturdy and un-tippable (use furniture anti-tip straps for added peace of mind). These furniture straps will secure cupboards, cabinets, dressers, and other freestanding items to the wall.
- Lock all drawers, cabinets, windows and doors. Install drawer safety latches on all storage areas that your little one shouldn’t have access to without supervision.
- Cover electrical outlets. Make sure any heat sources such as heaters and radiators have secure guards around them to keep your little one from touching them. Place electrical plug covers over all electrical sockets to prevent little fingers and items from being poked into the sockets..
- Never place toys or other things that your child may want on high shelves, which could encourage them to climb. Adding to this , never leave any type of drawers open, which could enable your child to climb.
- Make sure to check dresser knobs are secured, and unable to be pulled from drawers and doors. Dresser knobs should also be too large to place into the mouth and too small to act as a a foothold for climbing. They should also be securely attached.
- Soften and pad sharp edges on tables, cribs, beds and other surfaces with angles. Specially designed furniture corner guards can help to prevent bumps, bruises and cuts. Never tape foam or other materials to furniture corners as these can be ripped of and present a choking hazard.
- Store toys away to created a tidy area. Keep toys either in an easily accessible place or out of your child’s sight. If you are using a toy box, make sure that the lid is securely locked, or alternatively, choose a toy box without a lid to prevent your child from getting locked inside.
- Take care and give thought to selecting window treatment. Avoid curtains that can be climbed or pulled down. Tie up or remove dangerous hanging window-shade and window-blind cords using blind a curtain safety cords.
